CNIB AFB: American Foundation for the Blind - Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

English Français Find a Mentor Tips Register Home

The CNIB and AFB have joined forces (and resources) to create "MentorMatch"—an online Internet service that pairs people searching for a career with a blind or visually impaired mentor currently employed in the desired field of employment.

Together the CNIB Employment Accommodation Service's EAS-e system and the AFB CareerConnect® database currently hold over 1,000 mentors. MentorMatch has mentors in virtually every province and state in North America. These mentors currently work in the same career you are exploring and are willing to work with you and help you succeed. Your mentor could be waiting for you across the street or maybe only a few blocks away.

The MentorMatch system is available to all blind and visually impaired persons, currently working or seeking employment in a chosen field. Individuals of all ages and in all disciplines are encouraged to register. To register as a MentorMatch User please click here. Then you can use the "Find a Mentor" link to search for a visually impaired professional in the field of your choice. You can contact them using our easy, accessible web interface. If you are employed and would like to register as a Mentor with our program, please use this link.

Finding a mentor is an important part of any modern job search. Having contact with a person currently working in your desired field gives you access to information that could make or break your success at your next job interview. By working with a mentor you will learn what the demands are for a professional in your field and be able to prepare yourself to address every aspect of the job. Search today for someone whose job interests you!

"I have been inspired throughout my life from reading about and meeting successful persons who happen to be blind or visually impaired. In addition to becoming even more motivated through this experience, I have been able to learn many practical skills and ideas unique to those of us who are blind. Without such encounters with so many generous people, I know that I would have invented the wheel many times over."

—Jim Sanders, President, CNIB

Being a mentor can be a life-changing experience. It builds personal and professional growth through enhanced communication, time management, leadership, and interpersonal skills development. You will be challenged to expand your understanding of the many relationships that are an important part of the 'world of work'. As a mentor you will enjoy the feeling of personal accomplishment and satisfaction by helping someone achieve their goals in life.
